Building an accessible testing platform: practical decisions and tradeoffs
Alana is an accessibility testing marketplace connecting companies with testers who use assistive technology daily. Building the platform required operational choices that keep output useful for product teams while staying realistic about scope, legal claims, and quality control.
1) Design for actionable output, not just observations
Many accessibility reports fail because they are hard to route into backlog workflows. We designed issue output around reproducibility: clear steps, environment details, impact context, and WCAG reference when relevant. This format helps engineering and QA teams triage quickly.
2) Match testers to context, not only availability
Platform quality depends on matching by assistive technology and task type. A checkout flow may need different testing context than a data-heavy admin panel. Our matching process prioritizes relevance, because accurate findings require realistic usage conditions.
3) Be explicit about boundaries
Manual testing adds critical lived-experience signal, but it does not replace internal QA, legal review, or ongoing accessibility governance. We state this clearly on service pages to keep claims factual and to prevent teams from treating one test cycle as permanent compliance coverage.
4) Keep the experience accessible for both sides
Marketplace operations only work if the platform itself supports keyboard navigation, clear landmarks, robust labeling, and predictable workflows. Accessibility is not only a delivery output; it is a product quality requirement for the intake, reporting, and review process itself.
5) Build trust through consistency
Teams and testers need repeatable workflows. Structured forms, consistent issue states, and transparent review loops reduce ambiguity. Over time, consistency is what allows a marketplace model to scale without quality collapse.
